Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate the maximum print size from my photo?

Divide each pixel dimension by your target DPI. Example: a 6000×4000 pixel image at 300 DPI prints at 20×13.3 inches. At 150 DPI (acceptable for large prints), the same image prints at 40×26.7 inches. Enter your dimensions above for instant results.

What DPI do I need for a quality print?

300 DPI is the professional standard for prints viewed at arm's length — photos, books, business cards. 150–200 DPI is acceptable for large format prints like posters viewed from a distance. 72–96 DPI is for screen viewing only and will look blurry printed.

How many pixels do I need to print an 8×10 photo at 300 DPI?

8 × 300 = 2,400 pixels wide, 10 × 300 = 3,000 pixels tall. So you need at least 2400×3000 pixels (7.2 megapixels) for a sharp 8×10 inch print at 300 DPI.

Can I print a photo larger than the calculator's maximum size?

Yes, but with reduced sharpness. Printing below 300 DPI is often acceptable — 200 DPI looks fine for most people, 150 DPI works for large prints viewed from a distance. Professional large-format printing services often accept 150 DPI for posters and banners.

What is the difference between print size and display size?

Display size is measured in pixels (e.g. 1920×1080) and depends on screen resolution. Print size is measured in physical inches or centimeters and depends on DPI — how many pixels are packed per inch. The same 6000×4000 image can display at any monitor resolution, but prints at a fixed size determined by DPI.

How do I know if my photo is good enough to print large?

Use this calculator to find the maximum sharp print size at 300 DPI. If your desired print size exceeds this, it will still look acceptable at 150–200 DPI for large prints. A 12 MP phone photo (4000×3000) prints sharply up to 13×10 inches at 300 DPI, or up to 26×20 at 150 DPI.
