Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate image file size?
Uncompressed file size = Width × Height × Channels × Bit depth ÷ 8 (bytes). For a 4000×3000 RGB image at 8 bits per channel: 4000 × 3000 × 3 × 1 = 36,000,000 bytes ≈ 36 MB. JPEG compresses this by ~10–20× (to ~2–4 MB), PNG by ~2–4×.
How big is a 24 megapixel JPEG file?
A 24 MP JPEG (e.g. 6000×4000) produces a file of roughly 6–12 MB depending on subject complexity and quality setting. Scenes with lots of detail and noise produce larger files; flat or simple scenes produce smaller ones.
Why are PNG files larger than JPEG?
PNG uses lossless compression — every pixel value is preserved exactly. JPEG uses lossy compression that discards detail the eye barely notices, achieving ~10× better compression. For photos, JPEG is preferred for file size. For graphics with sharp edges or transparency, PNG is better quality.
How large is a RAW photo file?
RAW file size depends on the camera but is typically 1.5–2× the uncompressed pixel data due to lossless compression, plus metadata. A 24 MP RAW is typically 25–35 MB. Cameras with compressed RAW can be 40–60% smaller.
How do I reduce image file size without losing quality?
Use WebP format (25–35% smaller than JPEG at equivalent quality), reduce export quality slightly (85–90% JPEG is nearly indistinguishable from 100%), or downsample to the actual display dimensions needed. For photographers uploading to print shops, keep original resolution and quality.
How many photos fit on a 64GB memory card?
Divide storage capacity by average file size. A 64GB card holds ~64,000 MB. At 8 MB per JPEG (24 MP), that's ~8,000 photos. At 30 MB per RAW, that's ~2,100 RAW files. Use the calculator above to estimate your specific camera's file sizes.
